Steindl Glas "Glassics" is ideal on wood
(17.12.2009)
This development combines the unique advantages of timber construction with the innovative aspects of glass façades. “Wood as a ‘living’ construction material stands for warmth and a pleasant atmosphere inside any building. Yet excellent insulation is needed to reliably ensure warmth and well-being during the cold months. This is safeguarded by Steindl ‘Glassics’ – the frameless glass façade with an elegant look”, in the words of CEO Heinz Eisenbach. The homogeneous look of this glass façade endows any building with cutting-edge visual appeal. There are no limits to artistic and visual design, as this façade system is well-suited to both silkscreen printing and enamelling. This allows for the use of vibrant colours and gives space to individual designs.
Advantages of wood substructures
Wood not only offers better insulating properties than aluminium or steel structures but comes with lower acquisition and maintenance costs as well. An analysis of wind load factors (pressure, suction force) has shown that the use of “Glassics” on wood is suitable for high-rise buildings. Moreover, the test structures conformed to supreme safety standards, as pyrotechnical tests revealed supreme fire protection performance in the top category “non-flammable”.
Easy and quick mounting, long product life, simple cleaning as well as excellent wind and weather resistance are truly convincing arguments in favour of “Glassics” façades.
“Glassics” system technology
“Glassics” is based on the principle of structural glazing and offers two different system versions – “Glassics” System G1 and “Glassics” System G2:
System G1 convinces with its simple concept and mechanically secured panels with milled horizontal glass edges. It is composed of the substructure, an insulating material and glass panels with aluminium hook-on profiles that are pre-mounted off-site at the factory. Since the profiles are bonded into the horizontal grooves of the glass panels, the dead load is reliably absorbed and the panels are mechanically yet invisibly secured. The maximum glass panel size for this system is 3,000 x 1,300 mm. System G2 was developed for larger designs and is specifically suited for creating façades with large-format glass elements. The maximum panel size in vertical and horizontal format is 2,500 x 5,000 mm. Any glass panel installed at a height exceeding eight metres is fastened mechanically by means of the patented Steindl Glas security system. The glass panels are mounted directly onto the substructure.
